Mary Anning, Fossil Hunter

In the early 1800s, a young woman named Mary Anning walked the cliffs of Lyme Regis, England, searching for "curiosities" to sell to tourists.

When she was about twelve, Mary and her brother uncovered the first complete skeleton of an ichthyosaur, a giant marine reptile. Later she found one of the first plesiosaur skeletons and an important flying reptile, a pterosaur.

Because she was a woman from a poor family, the scientific societies of her day did not admit her as a member, and men often published her discoveries without credit.

Today, Mary Anning is recognized as one of the most important fossil collectors in history. Her finds helped scientists understand that species could become extinct β€” a revolutionary idea at the time.

1. Where did Mary Anning search for fossils?
2. What did she help discover?
3. Why didn’t she receive credit in her time?
4. Why were her discoveries important?
