Ancient Egypt’s Gift: The Nile

The Greek historian Herodotus called Egypt "the gift of the Nile," and for good reason. Without the river, ancient Egypt could not have existed.

Most of Egypt is desert. But every summer, the Nile flooded, spreading a layer of rich, dark silt across its banks. When the water went down, farmers planted wheat and barley in the fertile soil.

The river was also Egypt’s highway. Boats carried grain, stone and people up and down its length. The huge stone blocks used for some temples and monuments were floated on barges.

Because the floods were so important, Egyptians developed a calendar based on the river’s yearly cycle and watched the rising water closely to predict the harvest.
