Animal Camouflage

Camouflage is a way animals hide by blending in with their surroundings.

A snowshoe hare’s fur is brown in summer and white in winter, so it matches the ground. A stick insect looks so much like a twig that birds fly right past it. An octopus can change its skin color and texture in less than a second.

Camouflage helps prey animals hide from predators. But predators use it too: a tiger’s stripes help it sneak up on animals in tall grass.

1. What is camouflage?
2. How does the snowshoe hare change?
3. How fast can an octopus change color?
4. How do predators use camouflage?
