The Water Cycle

The water you drink may once have been part of a cloud, a glacier or even a dinosaur’s puddle. That is because Earth’s water moves in a never-ending cycle.

The Sun heats water in oceans, lakes and rivers, turning it into an invisible gas called water vapor. This is evaporation. Plants also release water vapor from their leaves.

As water vapor rises, it cools and turns into tiny droplets that form clouds. This is condensation. When the droplets join and grow heavy, they fall as rain, snow, sleet or hail. This is precipitation.

The water collects in oceans, lakes, rivers and underground, and the cycle begins again.

1. What is evaporation?
