Grandpa’s Garden

Every summer, I help Grandpa in his garden. He says tomatoes are like people: they need sun, water and a little patience.

This year I planted my own row of beans. I watered them every morning, but nothing happened for a week. I wanted to dig them up to check.

"Wait," Grandpa said. "Good things grow underground before you can see them."

On the tenth day, tiny green loops pushed through the soil. I shouted so loudly that a bird flew off the fence.

Vocabulary: patience — use clues to define it: ________________

2. Find a phrase that uses figurative language. What does it mean?
3. How does the structure (beginning, middle, end) build the story?
4. How would the story change if another character told it?
Answer key: first person; device: simile: "tomatoes are like people"; structure: chronological · patience = being able to wait calmly
