Read closely. Think about how the author wrote it.

How Volcanoes Form

Deep below Earth’s surface, it is hot enough to melt rock. Melted rock underground is called magma.

Magma is lighter than the solid rock around it, so it slowly rises. When it pushes through a crack in Earth’s crust, it erupts. Melted rock that reaches the surface is called lava.

As lava cools, it hardens into new rock. After many eruptions, layers of rock can build a mountain. Some islands, such as the Hawaiian Islands, formed this way.
