The Archivist

The city archive was scheduled for demolition, and Nadia was the last employee left to decide what to save. Two hundred years of records filled the basement: birth certificates, property deeds, letters, ledgers. The new digital system had room for only a fraction.

Her supervisor’s instructions were simple: keep documents with legal value; discard the rest.

But in a box marked "Misc." she found a child’s school essay from 1911 titled "What I Will Be." The girl, Marta, wanted to be a doctor at a time when few women could. Clipped to it was a 1932 newspaper notice: Dr. Marta Kowalski, appointed to the county hospital.

The essay had no legal value. Nadia scanned it anyway, and then the box beside it, and the one beside that. She worked until morning, understanding that a city’s memory is made not only of deeds and ledgers, but of hopes written down by children.

1. What is Nadia’s task?
2. What do her supervisor’s instructions prioritize?
3. Why does the 1911 essay matter to Nadia?
4. What theme does the last sentence express?
Theme: State the theme and explain how it develops over the text.
Answer key: 1) deciding which archive records to save before demolition · 2) documents with legal value · 3) it shows a girl’s dream that came true, preserving human history beyond legal records · 4) a community’s memory includes personal hopes, not just official records · Theme: Personal stories are an essential part of history and memory.
