The Fixer

Everyone in the building knew Mr. Abara could fix anything — radiators, toasters, a cracked violin, once even a parakeet’s broken cage door with a paperclip and a prayer.

So when his own radio fell silent the month after his wife died, the neighbors were surprised that he didn’t fix it. It sat on the windowsill for weeks, dusty and quiet.

Finally, twelve-year-old Dami knocked on his door with a screwdriver. "I can try," she said. He looked at her for a long time, then stepped aside.

The problem was a single loose wire. When the music crackled back to life — an old highlife song his wife had loved — Mr. Abara sat down heavily and covered his face. Dami thought she had done something wrong. But then he began, quietly, to hum.

Some things, she realized, a person cannot fix for himself, no matter how skilled his hands.

1. Why are the neighbors surprised?
2. Why do you think he leaves the radio broken?
3. What does Mr. Abara’s humming suggest?
4. How does the final line state the theme?
Theme: State the theme and explain how it develops over the text.
Answer key: 1) Mr. Abara, who fixes everything, doesn’t fix his own radio · 2) grief: the music reminds him of his late wife · 3) he is beginning to heal and accept the memory · 4) some healing requires help from others · Theme: Grief sometimes requires the help of others to heal.
