The Dust Bowl

In the 1930s, a series of severe droughts struck the southern Great Plains. Winds lifted the dry topsoil into enormous "black blizzards" that blotted out the sun and buried farms in dust.

The disaster was not caused by drought alone. In the decades before, farmers had plowed up millions of acres of native grassland whose deep roots had held the soil in place. When the rains failed, nothing anchored the earth.

Hundreds of thousands of people left the region, many heading west to California in search of work, a migration later portrayed in John Steinbeck’s novel The Grapes of Wrath.

In response, the federal government created the Soil Conservation Service in 1935, teaching farmers techniques such as contour plowing, crop rotation and planting rows of trees as windbreaks.
