Social Media and the Teenage Brain

Adolescence is a period of rapid brain development. Regions involved in seeking rewards and social approval become especially active, while the prefrontal cortex — which helps with planning and self-control — continues maturing into the mid-twenties.

Social media platforms are designed to reward engagement with likes, comments and endless feeds. Some researchers argue that this design interacts powerfully with the teenage brain’s sensitivity to social feedback.

Studies on social media and teen well-being have produced mixed findings. Heavy use has been associated with poorer sleep and, in some studies, symptoms of anxiety and depression. Yet many teens also report that social media helps them feel connected and supported, especially those who feel isolated offline.

Because correlation does not prove causation, researchers continue to study which kinds of use are harmful, which are helpful and for whom. In the meantime, many experts recommend protecting sleep, turning off nonessential notifications and noticing how online time affects mood.

Answer key: 1) the prefrontal cortex · 2) to reward engagement with likes, comments and endless feeds · 3) heavy use linked to poorer sleep and sometimes anxiety/depression, but many teens feel connected and supported · 4) associations don’t show social media causes the problems; more research is needed · Central idea: Social media’s effects on teens are complex, and careful habits are recommended while research continues.
