| penguin | a bird that cannot fly but swims very well in icy seas |
| Arctic | the very cold area around the North Pole |
| mittens | gloves that keep all your fingers together |
| snowdrift | a deep pile of snow blown by the wind |
| shiver | to shake because you are cold |
| solstice | the shortest day of the year, in December (north of the equator) |
| cosy | warm, comfortable and snug |
