The Snow Day

When Mateo woke up, the world outside his window was white. Snow covered the cars, the fences and the tops of the trees. On the radio, a voice said, “All schools are closed today.”

Mateo pulled on his boots, his coat, his hat and his warmest mittens. Outside, the cold air pinched his nose. Every step made a soft crunch.

He rolled a small snowball, then pushed it across the yard until it grew too big to move. His neighbour, Mrs. Lin, came out to help him lift the head. They gave the snowman two stones for eyes and a carrot for a nose.

When his fingers began to tingle, Mateo went inside. Mrs. Lin came too, and they drank hot cocoa by the window and watched new snowflakes fall on the snowman’s hat.

A Pagine Original story.
