How the school system works

The Competency-Based Curriculum, developed by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), focuses on core competencies such as communication, critical thinking and digital literacy. The first Grade 9 cohort sat the KJSEA in 2025 and joined senior school in January 2026, choosing among STEM, Social Sciences, and Arts and Sports Science pathways.

Pre-primary 1–2 (PP1–PP2), Lower Primary (Grades 1–3), Upper Primary (Grades 4–6), Junior School (Grades 7–9) and Senior School (Grades 10–12). The last 8-4-4 KCSE cohort finishes Form 4 in 2027.

Finishing school: Senior school learners take seven subjects: four core subjects (English, Kiswahili or Kenyan Sign Language, Community Service Learning and Physical Education) and three from their chosen pathway.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between CBC and CBE?

Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) was renamed Competency-Based Education (CBE) after the 2023 Presidential Working Party on Education Reform. The structure (2-6-3-3-3) is the same.

How is KJSEA scored?

The final Grade 9 result combines KPSEA in Grade 6 (20%), school-based assessments in Grades 7 and 8 (20%) and the KJSEA itself (60%). Each of nine subjects carries up to 8 points (72 in total), and results are reported in performance levels rather than ranked.

Are these official tests?

All questions and passages are original and written for Pagine to match the published curriculum. Pagine is not affiliated with any government, ministry, department of education, exam board or assessment body. Not official tests.
