How the school system works
Under NEP 2020, school education is organised in a 5+3+3+4 structure: Foundational (age 3–8: Balvatika and Classes 1–2), Preparatory (Classes 3–5), Middle (Classes 6–8) and Secondary (Classes 9–12). NCERT has released new textbooks such as "The World Around Us" for Classes 3–5, "Curiosity" for science and "Exploring Society: India and Beyond" for social science in the middle stage.
Pre-primary (Balvatika/LKG/UKG), Classes 1–5 (primary), 6–8 (middle), 9–10 (secondary) and 11–12 (senior secondary, with Science, Commerce or Humanities streams).
Finishing school: Students take board exams at the end of Class 10 and Class 12. From 2026, CBSE Class 10 has two board exams a year: the first (February) is compulsory and the second (May) is optional for improving up to three subjects.
Official curriculum: NCERT National Curriculum Framework (NCF-SE 2023) and CBSE syllabus

Frequently asked questions
Is there a national curriculum in India?
Education is on the Concurrent List: both the Union and states can make laws. NCERT writes the National Curriculum Framework and textbooks, which CBSE schools and many state boards use or adapt. Each state also has its own board for state-run and affiliated schools.
What is changing in CBSE board exams?
From 2026, Class 10 students take a compulsory board exam in February and may take an optional second exam in May to improve up to three subjects. Class 12 papers continue to include a large share of competency-based questions.
Are these official tests?
