How the school system works
The Ministry of Education’s new curriculum framework covers KG to Grade 12. Primary education is usually taught in a regional or mother-tongue language, with English taught as a subject and becoming the main medium of instruction in later grades. In Grades 11–12, students follow a Natural Science or Social Science stream.
Kindergarten (KG), Primary (Grades 1–6), Middle (Grades 7–8) and Secondary (Grades 9–12). Students sit regional exams at the end of Grade 6 and Grade 8 and the national secondary school leaving examination at the end of Grade 12.
Finishing school: The Grade 12 national examination is used for university entry. Since 2022 it has been held at university campuses; in the 2024/25 exam only 8.4% of candidates reached the 50% pass mark.
