Thanksgiving folklore & fun facts
The Thanksgiving story most often told dates to 1621, when the Pilgrims of Plymouth shared a three-day harvest feast with the Wampanoag people who had helped them survive their first year. There were no pumpkin pies or forks — the meal likely featured venison, wildfowl, corn and seasonal vegetables. Thanksgiving became a regular American holiday much later: writer Sarah Josepha Hale campaigned for decades until President Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanks in 1863. At its heart, though, the day has always been about gratitude and sharing a table.
