Vicente Blasco Ibáñez was a politician, journalist and novelist who became an international bestseller. His early novels such as The Cabin (La barraca, 1898) portray the farmers of Valencia; Blood and Sand (1908) follows a bullfighter; and The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1916), a World War I epic, was a huge hit in America and became a 1921 film starring Rudolph Valentino.
