Emilia Pardo Bazán brought naturalism into Spanish fiction and fought all her life for women’s education. The House of Ulloa (Los pazos de Ulloa, 1886), set on a decaying Galician estate, is her best-known novel. She wrote hundreds of short stories, and in 1916 became the first woman to hold a chair of literature at the university in Madrid.
