1896–1940 · St. Paul, Minnesota · also known as Francis Scott Fitzgerald, Scott Fitzgerald
F. Scott Fitzgerald named and chronicled the Jazz Age. His first novel, This Side of Paradise (1920), made him famous overnight, and he and his wife Zelda became celebrities of 1920s New York and Paris. The Great Gatsby (1925) — Nick Carraway’s account of the mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and his longing for Daisy Buchanan — sold modestly in his lifetime but is now one of the most read American novels. Tender Is the Night (1934) followed. He died at 44 believing himself a failure.
