Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, wrote and illustrated more than 60 books whose bouncing rhymes and wild creatures taught generations of children to read. The Cat in the Hat (1957) was written using only a few hundred simple words, and Green Eggs and Ham (1960) uses just 50. His birthday, March 2, is celebrated in American schools as Read Across America Day.
