The real reason is Earth's tilt. Earth's axis leans about 23.5 degrees. In June, the Northern Hemisphere tilts toward the sun, so sunlight strikes it more directly and days are longer.
Direct sunlight concentrates more energy on each patch of ground, and longer days give the sun more time to warm the land and water.
Meanwhile, the Southern Hemisphere tilts away and has winter. When one half has summer, the other has winter.
