The Printing Press Changes the World

Before the 1450s, books in Europe were copied by hand, often by monks. A single Bible could take a scribe more than a year to finish, so books were rare and expensive.

Around 1440, Johannes Gutenberg developed a printing press with movable metal type. Individual letters could be arranged, inked and pressed onto paper again and again, then rearranged for the next page.

Within fifty years, printing presses had spread across Europe and millions of books had been printed. More people learned to read, and new ideas in science, religion and politics spread faster than ever before.

Many historians consider the printing press one of the most important inventions in human history because of how it changed the way knowledge was shared.

1. How were books made before the printing press?
2. What was new about Gutenberg’s press?
3. What were two effects of printing?
4. Why do historians consider it so important?
