Read closely. Think about how the author wrote it.

The Map in the Attic

The map was folded into a square no bigger than a playing card, tucked inside a book about birds. When Imani spread it on the attic floor, dust rose in a little cloud.

It was hand-drawn: their street, the creek behind the houses and, past the old mill, a small X labeled in her great-grandfather’s neat writing — "What matters most."

Imani and her brother spent Saturday following it. They waded the creek, pushed through blackberry brambles and finally dug beneath a flat stone by the mill. Their shovel hit metal: a tin box, rusted shut.

Inside there was no gold. There were letters — dozens of them — that their great-grandparents had written to each other during the years he worked overseas. Imani read the first one aloud, and her brother, who never sat still, listened until the sun went down.

"I guess he was right," her brother said at last. "This is what matters most."

Vocabulary: brambles — determine its meaning from context: ________________

1. Identify the point of view. How does it shape what the reader knows?
2. Identify a literary device (figurative language, imagery, symbolism). Explain its effect on meaning or tone.
3. How does the structure (order of events, pacing, turning point) contribute to the meaning?
4. Analyze how a specific word choice affects tone.
Answer key: third person limited (Imani); device: foreshadowing in the label "What matters most"; subverted expectation (no gold); structure: quest with a twist ending · brambles = prickly bushes
