The Lighthouse Keeper’s Daughter

Every night for twenty years, Mira’s father had climbed the 112 steps of the lighthouse to light the great lamp. Tonight he lay in bed with a broken ankle, and a storm was rolling in from the sea.

"The fishing boats are still out," he said, wincing as he tried to stand. Mira had watched him a thousand times, but she had never done it alone.

She grabbed the lantern and began to climb. The wind screamed against the windows and the stairs seemed to stretch forever. Her legs burned, but she kept counting: one hundred ten, one hundred eleven, one hundred twelve.

With trembling hands she lit the wick and cranked the great lens. A beam of gold swept across the black water. Far out, a horn sounded twice — the signal that the boats had seen the light and were turning for home.
