Climate Feedback Loops

A feedback loop occurs when a change triggers effects that either amplify it (a positive feedback) or dampen it (a negative feedback). Several feedback loops help explain why Earth’s climate can change faster than expected.

Consider Arctic sea ice. Bright ice reflects much of the sunlight that hits it. As warming melts the ice, darker ocean water is exposed, which absorbs more heat, causing more melting. This is called the ice–albedo feedback.

Permafrost β€” ground that has stayed frozen for thousands of years β€” stores large amounts of carbon. As it thaws, microbes break down that organic matter and release carbon dioxide and methane, which trap more heat.

Not all feedbacks amplify warming. Plants may grow faster with more carbon dioxide and absorb some of it. Scientists study these competing effects to make climate projections more accurate.
