Overtime

The factory’s new machines arrived on a Monday, crated like coffins. By Friday, half the night shift had been told their positions were "no longer required."

Carla had worked the line for nineteen years. She knew the sounds of every machine the way a mother knows her children’s cries. On her last night, she walked the floor slowly, touching the old presses as if saying goodbye to old friends.

The engineer installing the new system, a young man named Felix, stopped her. "The sensors keep flagging a vibration in Line Four," he said, embarrassed. "I can’t find it."

Carla closed her eyes and listened. "Bearing on the third roller," she said. "It hums a half-tone flat when it’s going." Felix checked. She was right. He looked at the shiny screen, then at her. "They didn’t put that in the manual," he said. The next morning, the plant manager offered Carla a new job: training the people who would train the machines.

1. What happens to the night shift?
2. How is Carla’s knowledge described?
3. How does Carla solve the engineer’s problem?
4. What does the ending suggest about technology and experience?
Theme: State the theme and explain how it develops over the text.
Answer key: 1) many workers lose their jobs to new machines · 2) she knows the machines’ sounds like a mother knows her children’s cries · 3) she identifies the faulty bearing by its sound · 4) human experience and tacit knowledge remain valuable alongside automation · Theme: Experience and human knowledge retain value in an age of automation.
