Earthworms pull leaves into their burrows and eat them along with bits of soil. What passes through their bodies, called castings, is full of nutrients that plants need.
Their tunnels also let air and water reach plant roots. Scientists estimate that a healthy field can hold more than a million earthworms per acre.
So the next time you see a worm after rain, remember: it is one of nature's most important recyclers.
