The Thank-You Tree

The week before Thanksgiving, Ms. Okafor pinned a big paper tree to the classroom wall. It had a brown trunk and bare branches. “This is our Thank-You Tree,” she said. “Every day, you can add a leaf.”

On each paper leaf, the children wrote something they were thankful for. Leo wrote “my dog, Biscuit.” Amara wrote “my grandma’s jollof rice.” Ben wrote “the lunch lady, who always smiles.”

By Wednesday, the tree was covered in red, orange and yellow leaves. Ms. Okafor read some out loud. The children noticed that most leaves were about people, not things.

On the last day, they took the leaves home to share at their family dinners. Amara read hers to her grandma, who laughed and promised to make jollof rice that very night.

A Pagine Original story.
