What Is Hanukkah?

Hanukkah is a Jewish festival that lasts for eight nights. It is sometimes called the Festival of Lights. It begins on the 25th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev, which usually falls in late November or December.

More than two thousand years ago, a king who ruled the land of Judea would not let Jewish people practise their religion. A small group called the Maccabees fought back and won. They cleaned the Temple in Jerusalem and dedicated it again. The word Hanukkah means “dedication.”

The story is told that the Maccabees found only enough pure oil to keep the Temple lamp burning for one day — but it burned for eight days. That is why Hanukkah lasts eight nights.

Each night, families light a candle on a special menorah, adding one more every night until eight are glowing. They play dreidel, eat foods fried in oil such as latkes and jam doughnuts, and give coins called gelt.
