A little jack-o’-lantern
with a candle for a heart,
glows upon the doorstep
where the trick-or-treats will start.

Five small bats hang upside down,
sleepy in the steeple.
One wakes up and flaps away
to peek at trick-or-treat people.
Four, then three, then two, then one —
out into the night they zoom,
then home again by morning light
to snooze inside their room.

Knock, knock, Halloween,
who is at my door?
A ghost, a witch, a shy green witch,
and three black cats — no, four!
“Trick or treat!” they giggle,
I drop sweets in each sack.
Then off they patter down the path…
and next year they’ll be back.

There once was a ghost who said “please,”
who floated about with such ease.
He’d whisper “Excuse me,”
then giggle, “Now, boo-me!”
the politest of ghosts, if you please.

Autumn comes creeping
on orange and gold,
the evenings grow spooky,
the mornings grow cold.
Grab a warm blanket,
a torch and a book —
the best place for shivers
is a cosy reading nook.
