| mithai | Indian sweets, often shared with family and friends at Diwali |
| marigold | a bright orange or yellow flower used in Diwali decorations |
| festival | a special time of celebration |
| Kartika | the month in the Hindu calendar when Diwali falls (October or November) |
| Bandi Chhor Divas | the Sikh celebration held at the same time as Diwali |
