In the middle of the cornfield stood a scarecrow named Sam. His job was to scare the crows away.
But Sam didn’t like scaring anyone. “I just want a friend,” he sighed.
One morning, a small crow landed on his hat. “Aren’t you going to shout BOO?” she asked.
“No,” said Sam. “Would you like to talk instead?”
The crow, whose name was Cora, told Sam about the wide blue sky. Sam told Cora about the tall, rustling corn.
“I have an idea,” said Cora. “My family will eat the bugs that hurt the corn — if you let us rest on your arms.”
So the crows ate the bugs, the corn grew tall, and the farmer had the best harvest of all.
Now Sam is never lonely. Every autumn, his arms are full of friends.
